What is Shoulder Bursitis?
Shoulder bursitis is characterized by pain and soreness around the shoulder, particularly while elevating the arm over the head. Shoulder bursitis arises when the subacromial bursa, a large sac on the top of the shoulder, gets inflamed. This is why it is also known as subacromial bursitis. Bursae are pouches of lubricating fluid that are present between tissues such as bone, muscles, tendons, and skin to minimize rubbing friction and discomfort.
Causes are:
Shoulder bursitis is most commonly caused by the recurrent impact on the shoulder or by a sudden catastrophic injury; nevertheless, aging also plays a role since tendons with age are less capable of absorbing stress or are less elastic, making them more easily torn. Subacromial bursitis can also be caused by overuse or injury to the shoulder during work or play. Throwing, pitching, painting, gardening, raking, woodworking, shoveling, and cleaning are all high-risk occupations. Tennis, golf, skiing, cricket, basketball, badminton, and other activities are common causes of Subacromial bursitis.
Improper posture at home, as well as inadequate stretching or conditioning before exercise, can all contribute to Subacromial bursitis. An abnormal or poorly positioned bone or joint can cause bursitis. Stress or inflammation caused by other disorders such as thyroid issues, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, or unexpected pharmaceutical responses may further raise a person’s risk; also, an infection can contribute to bursa inflammation.
The most common symptoms of Subacromial bursitis are:
Shoulder pain.
The discomfort may appear gradually or suddenly and severely, especially if calcium deposits are present.
Loss of motion in the shoulder.
